Download Family Tree Maker
You’ve been researching your genealogy. You started with a paper and pen then moved onto documenting your family tree on the computer. The problem is no matter how much you work at it, you just can’t make it look the way you want. Problem solved! Download Family Tree Maker and you will discover a robust computer program that organizes your work easily.
Family Tree Maker provides you with seven different workspaces to let you create your family tree faster than you ever thought possible. The “Plan” workspace allows you to either start typing in your family tree information or import it from a different file. Most people do not yet have their family tree in a format that can be imported, so you will probably just start typing yours in. You start out by entering your name and the names of your parents as well as everyone’s dates and places of birth.
The “People” workspace provides a graphical representation of the people in your tree. It allows you to see the genealogy you have documented in an easy to read chart. When you click on a person in the tree, you can see their information on the right and edit it. Information you can edit includes details about important dates in that person’s life such as date and place of birth, date and place of death, and date and place of marriage. You can also track where the person lived and document anything you know about the person, such as occupational history.
The “Places” workspace in Family Tree Maker provides an interactive map that you can use. How it works is you select a place from a list of values on the left side of the screen. A map appears in the middle of your screen showing you the area. The right side of the screen shows everyone in your genealogy who was in that area. It allows you to easily track the migration of your ancestors.
The “Media” workspace allows you to manage media, such as photos, documents, audio files, and video. You can see everything you’ve collected in one location. You can then provide whatever description about the media that you can remember. For example, if you upload a picture that includes a wedding cake, you can provide information about who made the cake. You should document everything you can about any media you upload into Family Tree Maker so you don’t forget anything later.
The “Sources” workspace allows you to view where you found information about your genealogy. For example, one source might be the 1920 Federal Census. Another source might be a marriage certificate. When you click on a source, the system will show you what information you’ve managed to get from the source. It provides an easy way for you to keep track of your research. You can also edit the details of a selected citation using this option.
The “Publish” workspace allows you to quickly create meaningful reports from your information. You can print out a chart of your family tree. You can view reports that show you relationships between the various people in your genealogy.
The “Web Search” tab allows you to search sites for information about your family history. It provides links to ancestry.com, rootsweb.com, and genealogy.com as well as the more popular search engine.
